Walk into any one of your stores and the first thing a customer notices isn't the signage or the layout. It's the sound. Before a shopper reads a single sign or scans a single shelf, the music playing overhead has already told them something about your brand. You may not have meant it to.

For single-site retailers, that's a manageable risk. For a multi-site operator running dozens or hundreds of locations, it's a live one. A regional manager's Spotify playlist. A staff member's phone plugged into the speaker. A radio station picked because it was the first preset on the stereo. None of it is malicious, and all of it is a brand inconsistency you didn't approve. Multiply that across every store in the network, and brand experience stops being something head office controls. It becomes something head office hopes for.

Music is doing more work than you think

It's tempting to file in-store music under ambience: nice to have, hard to measure, low priority next to inventory systems and rostering software. The research doesn't support that filing. A 2016 meta-analysis in the Journal of Retailing, drawing on 66 studies and more than 15,000 data points, found that the presence of music in a retail environment is consistently linked to higher customer pleasure, satisfaction, and behavioural intention compared with silence (Roschk, Loureiro & Breitsohl, 2016). The effect sizes are modest individually, but they're consistent, and that's a rarer and more useful finding than one flashy stat. It means music reliably nudges the shopping experience in the right direction, store after store, without needing a special occasion or a big campaign to work.

There's also a case most retailers overlook entirely: your own team. A 2025 Ohio State University study published in the Journal of Applied Psychology found that when background music doesn't match what an employee needs to focus, regulate mood, or feel energised, it measurably increases fatigue and reduces job satisfaction, with knock-on effects for how staff behave at work. Separately, a VU Amsterdam field study across 140 Dutch stores found that slower-tempo music (roughly 80 to 100 BPM) improved staff mood and job satisfaction, with no measurable change in overall store turnover. Getting the soundtrack right for the people on the floor doesn't cost you anything on the till. That study also found the reverse holds: leave music choice to individual staff discretion and satisfaction measures move in the wrong direction. Your frontline staff spend eight hours a day inside whatever soundscape you choose for them. If it's wrong for them, it shows up in service quality before it shows up in a spreadsheet.

So the real design brief for in-store music isn't "make it sound nice." It's this: does this track list serve the customer's mood, match the moment in their day, and support the people standing behind the counter for a full shift? That's a curation problem, not a playlist problem.

What "doing it properly" actually requires

Getting this right at one store is a matter of taste. Getting it right at scale is a control problem, and it breaks down into three parts most retailers underestimate.

Curation that holds up over time. A playlist that felt fresh in March is stale by September. Music needs to be actively managed, refreshed, checked for brand fit, adjusted for season and daypart, not set once and left alone.

Licensing that doesn't expose you. Commercial playback of music requires public performance licensing on top of any streaming subscription, a requirement plenty of store managers don't know applies to a personal Spotify account plugged into the sound system. It's a compliance gap hiding in plain sight, and it's the kind of thing that only surfaces when someone asks the wrong question at the wrong time.

Consistency without losing local flexibility. Head office needs to know the brand sounds the same in Bondi as it does in Brisbane. But consistent doesn't have to mean identical. The smartest setups allow scheduling by daypart, weather, or foot traffic while keeping every store inside brand-approved boundaries.

Control first, then the orchestration pays off

None of this is abstract for a business with one location. It becomes a genuine commercial issue only once you're running many.
